Websites Are Never Finished, Only Launched

Category: Development
Published:

This is a phrase we use often when speaking to our clients. Being from a print and design background myself, I was always used to producing finished work. Whenever a job went to print, it had to be 100% accurate and correct. Design, artwork and print set up had to be checked in meticulous detail because once a job was printed, if a mistake was discovered or an image wasn't up to standard, you were looking at an expensive and embarrassing reprint. The artworker's curse was the printer's delight. A brochure or booklet is also limited in terms of how many pages you can fill with information, and quite often the content would be out of date within a few months.

Websites are never finished, they're only launched

Thankfully, this is not the case with web design. In fact, regularly updating and adding to the content of your website is to be encouraged. Any digital marketer will tell you that Google loves fresh, new content and that you should have a strategy in place to continue to grow and update your website. It's quite a liberating possibility and it's another reason why smart businesses push information out online rather than investing in print these days. Graphic design and print is not dead by any means, but no one would argue that it's been seriously depleted over the last 10 years. You can check out my previous article on the rise of digital marketing in Glasgow for more on that.

Your website should be a constantly evolving and informative entity that showcases your business and reflects what's happening around it. A news area, or blog, can also act like an archive of your business's progress.

Mistakes inevitably happen in web design, as they do in print. The difference is that you can log in to your CMS (Content Management System) and fix inaccuracies, often within a few seconds. Mind you, it's no less embarrassing when someone calls you out on a mistake so we believe that the same principle should apply: check and check again!

If your website has been launched, but never really finished, or if you're unsure what kind of information you should be publishing about your business. You're in the right place, get in touch and let's discuss how it can work for you.
